Eid Al Adha 2014

Eid al-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى‎) means the Festival of Sacrifice or Feast of the Sacrifice.

When is Eid Al-Adha in 2014?

Eid al-Adha in 2014 is on Saturday, the 4th of October. As Muslim Calendar days begin from the sunset, observing Eid al-Adha will be started on the sunset of Friday, the 3rd of October.

Eid al-Adha will start in North America a day later – on Sunday, the 5th of October. As per Islamic calendar/Hijri calendar, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of the month of Zul-Hijjah.

About Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha is the festival of sacrifice because on this day, Muslims scarifies live stock animal by the name of Allah as per the instruction in the holy Quran. The sacrifice is called Qurbani (Arabic: قربان‎). For the satisfaction of Allah, Qurbani (sacrifice) of domestic, halah (Legal) animals like camels, cows, buffalos, sheep etc. is performed. Qurbani is compulsory for adult male and female who have wealth to purchase the animal.

Other names of Eid Al Adha

Eid Al Adha is an Arabic word. Eid Al Adha is also called by various names around the world such as Turkish (Kurban Bayramı), Bengali কোরবানির ঈদ (Korbanir Eid), Russian (Курбан-байрам), Bulgarian and Macedonian (Курбан Байрам), Mandarin Chinese (古尔邦节 Gúěrbāng Jié), and Malaysian and Indonesian (Hari Raya Korban, Qurbani). Eid al-Kabir, an Arabic term meaning “The Greater Eid”, is used in Yemen, Syria, and North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt).

Lesson of Eid Al Adha

Humanity exists in man but animalism also seen in man. The ultimate aim of Qurbani is to raise the standard of humanity, eliminating or killing animalism through Qurbani. Through Qurbani, lust and greed, animalism inside is removed.

The spirit of Qurbani is to declare that all are ready to sacrifice their life and property for the satisfaction of Allah.

One portion of Qurbani’s meat is to be distributed among the poor people, one portion to the relatives and one for self consumption. All these actions improve fellow feeling and spirit of co operation among all.

How the Qurbani in Eid Al Adha is performed

Usually on the day of Eid Al Adha, an Eid pryer need to perfom in congregation. After the Eid prayer, Muslims shower their animals and prepare for slaughtering. Then they slaughter their animal by the name of Allah. Healthy, disease free are to be slaughtered for Qurbani. The minimum age of small cattle like goat, sheep should be at least one year and bigger animals like cow, buffalos should be two years and for the camel at least five years.

The meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts. One third of the share is for the consumption of the family; another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors; and the other third is given to the poor and needy.

Qurbani is a part of Hajj also where the pilgrims perform their Qurbani as a last duty Hajj. After Qurbani, Hajj pilgrims shave their head and come out of Ihram.

Some common practice

On Eid al Adha, people prepare traditional foods and sweets in their home to entertain their friends and relatives. Visit relative’s house to meet them. Some also exchange gift with each other. The Qurbani can be performed up to three days from the beginning day of Eid Al Adha.
